Introduction to Cipe Pineles

Meet Cipe Pineles, the first woman art director of a mass-market American publication. She was also credited with another "first"; the first woman to be asked to join the all-male New York Art Directors Club and later their Hall of Fame. Pineles began working in graphic design at Conde Nast Publications (Vogue, Vanity Fair, House and Garden), working under Dr. M.F. Agha. Later in her career, she took on jobs as Glamour, Seventeen, and Charm and taught at the Parson's School of Art and Design. Pineles's impact in graphic design is undeniable as she created a gateway for other women in the field. Pinele's legacy has lived on even after her death in 1991.
